Elizabeth Gurley Flynn: feminist, supported women’s voting rights, practiced freedom of speech, championed workers’ rights, founding member of ACLU, supported women’s rights, birth control, and women’s suffrage.
Franklin Pierce: racist, opposed women’s and Black peoples’ voting rights, practiced speech acceptable to his political party in 1852, supported slavery, opposed organized labor, leading member of pro-slavery Democratic party, opposed women’s rights along with the rights of any people of color and members of the working class. Don’t you suppose one could make a case for replacing Pierce memorials with Flynn memorials?
