Letter: Beware of false prophets

Pew Research Center estimates that 85% of white evangelical Protestants vote Republican and 75 % Latter-day Saints vote Republican. Christian Nationalism is a political ideology that advocates for national policies that are based on Christianity and Christian values. There appears to be a connection with white nationalism. Both the evangelical and Mormon denominations are predominately white.

President Trump has aligned himself and his policies with the Christian fundamentalist movement. I understand that many of his supporters believe that he was sent by God. In his first term, we witnessed thousands of immigrant children, seeking asylum at our southern border, being separated from their mothers. Many have been “lost” and never reunited.

No one disputes the need for immigration reform. However, the lack of due process and the appalling disrespect for the lives of people is unacceptable.

Cato Institute reports 65 percent of people taken by ICE had no convictions and 93 percent had no violent convictions. As of June 14, 133,687 detainees had no criminal convictions. My heritage is WASP. I know enough of the bible to know that this is not Christian. Matthew 7:15-20 “Watch out for false prophets, which come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves”.

And one the most powerful prayer of Jesus’s as he was about to die on the cross, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.” (Luke 23:34)
