Minutes after a car carrying Rudy Giuliani stopped to aid a woman involved in a domestic violence incident on Saturday night, it exited Interstate 93 southbound, got back on the highway in the other direction and was struck almost directly across from where it initially stopped.

These new details, released by the New Hampshire State Police, provide some clarity on the strange circumstances behind the crash, which left the former New York City mayor hospitalized.

Giuliani, 81, was being driven in a rented Ford Bronco by his spokesperson, Ted Goodman, when they were flagged down south of Exit 9N in Manchester by a woman on the side of the road at around 9 p.m.

Giuliani and Goodman stopped and reported the incident to law enforcement, who responded, according to State Police. Then, the two men exited the highway and turned around, traveling north on I-93.

At nearly the exact same location on the other side of the highway, the two men were hit by a Honda HR-V operated by a 19-year-old Concord woman. All three people involved in the collision suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

Police said that they are investigating “whether distraction or curiosity of the initial scene” was a factor in the crash. Video of the crash captured by officers stationed at the first scene is being reviewed, according to the statement.

No charges have been filed.

Giuliani suffered a fractured thoracic vertebra, along with multiple lacerations, contusions and injuries to his left arm and leg, according to his security chief, Michael Ragusa.

He was released from the hospital on Monday, the New York Times reported.

Giuliani attended a New Hampshire Fisher Cats game in Manchester on Saturday prior to the accident, WMUR reported.
