Give young folks credit
I feel as a society, we don’t give our young folks enough credit. I’m 2 score and 7 years old, so while not quite an old man I’m at the “get off my lawn” stage of life. I remember the Challenger disaster, the fall of the Berlin wall and Y2K. As a young man, I thought adults had all the answers. Over time I have realized that is not the case.
A great example of the wisdom of our young folks is the well-written opinion column published by the Concord Monitor this weekend by Nathan Baylus. This young student articulated just how absurd it is for one parent to complain and get a book removed from the curriculum. I am sure the parent that complained is too busy reading scripture to notice this new invention called “The Internet.” I personally would prefer students tackle difficult subjects in a structured, educational environment instead of a Google search.
I find it very disappointing that the Merrimack Valley School District collapsed faster than the New York Jets defense when challenged by an entitled parent. I understand why, entitled parents can be a huge hassle for teachers and administrators. What precedence has this decision set? We need to listen to the wisdom of young folks like Nathan Baylus and not fold to parents better suited to the 1950s. I hope the MVSD rethinks their decision.
