For those who like to start the new year outdoors, seven New Hampshire State Parks will host guided and self-guided outings for hiking, snowshoeing and walking on Jan. 1.

The annual “First Day Hikes” day is part of Americaโ€™s State Parksโ€™ national initiative that encourages people across the country to begin the year connecting with nature, exercising and enjoying fresh air.

โ€œNothing resets the spirit quite like stepping onto a quiet trail on the first morning of the year,โ€ said Eric Feldbaum, Bureau of Community Recreation Administrator, in a press release.

All 50 state park systems will offer guided and self-guided first-day hikes at select parks on what has become one of the biggest winter hiking days nationally. For more information on First Day Hikes nationally, visit stateparks.org.

This yearโ€™s seven parks are Bear Brook State Park, Monadnock State Park, Pisgah State Park, Silver Lake State Park, Weeks State Park, White Lake State Park and Wentworth-Coolidge Mansion.

NH State Parks will give out warm beverages, light snacks and they’ll do some giveaways. Those who wish to participate must register in advance and same-day sign-ups will not be available. Registration can be found at nhstateparks.org.

In a press release, the State of New Hampshire Division of Parks and Recreation reminded people to check the weather, dress in warm layers, wear winter-appropriate footwear, and strongly recommended bringing microspikes, water and snacks. They also ask that hikers help keep the trails clean.

โ€œThese hikes bring people together in a simple, meaningful way โ€” just fresh air, good company, and the beauty of our state parks,โ€ Feldbaum added.
