A man wanted for murder in Maine crashed into a tree after a lengthy police chase and was taken into custody Saturday morning, authorities said.

Dane Burke, 55, of Skowhegan, Maine, was sought by police because of his connection with a homicide investigation back in Maine. He was spotted driving a 2018 silver Jeep Compass by Lowell, Massachusetts, when a pursuit began, police said.

Burke refused to stop, and the pursuit continued onto parts of I-93, I-293, Route 101, and Route 114 before the vehicle went off the road and crashed into a tree on Route 13 in Dunbarton. New Hampshire state trooper surrounded the vehicle and took Burke into custody by using nonlethal weapons.

In addition to the criminal charges he faces in Maine and Massachusetts, Burke has been charged by the New Hampshire State Police as a fugitive from justice. Additional charges will be filed in connection with the pursuit.

Burke was taken to an area hospital with serious injuries and remains under law enforcement supervision. The Jeep was seized as evidence in connection with the homicide investigation in Maine.
