A few months ago, I took a card-making class with my mom. We spent several hours learning to fuse fabric scraps with paper frames onto cardstock, mixing and matching colors and designs so that every card we produced was unique and ornate in its own way.
Ever since then, I’ve relished writing and mailing cards to my loved ones every chance I get. Not only is it a way to say “I’m thinking of you” but it’s rendered extra special because I created the cards themselves. I’ve always been a letter-writer and card-sender, but taking this class reminded me just how lovely it can be to show your care for someone in this way — with your own two hands rather than with technology.
Think about it: Which feels more personal, a card or a text?
Rather than considering this practice “old fashioned,” I actually think that creating handmade cards is coming back into vogue. And if you venture to The Eleventh Letter Writing Gallery on Saturday, you’ll get to discover this for yourself!
The Writing Gallery is partnering with the Women’s Caucus for Art/New Hampshire Chapter to create “I Am Grateful for You” postcards ahead of Valentine’s Day. From 1-3 p.m. on Saturday, stop by the gallery at 146 N. Main Street in Concord to participate in this free event. All supplies, including postage, will be provided, so all you have to do is show up and bring your creative spirit and desire to spread kindness.
And if you’re feeling moved by art this weekend, you should also stop by Kimball Jenkins for the Concord Arts Market’s HeARTwork event on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Local vendors will be selling a variety of handcrafted goods perfect for last-minute Valentine’s Day gifts for your loved ones.
Finally, if you’re looking for some music to set the tone for your weekend, the Captiol Center for the Arts is the place to go. On Saturday evening at 7 p.m., Northern Cross will be playing a tribute show to “America’s first supergroup, Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young.” Then, on Sunday, there will be a High School Musical Singalong at 2 p.m. Both events will take place at the Bank of New Hampshire stage, with tickets available at www.ccanh.com
Enjoy the weekend!
