Some weekends, I find myself teeming with energy. Other weekends, I can barely motivate myself to leave my apartment, especially if it’s cold outside.
When I’m craving an adventure, I first turn to my White Mountain trail guides, stacked neatly on my coffee table for whenever I need them. Then, I scroll through social media to see if any establishments I follow have posted anything of interest.
I also rely on the Monitor’s Community Calendar to help me organize my weekend plans. You can locate the calendar on the “events” tab at the top of our website. It allows you to filter by date and location, which is perfect if you don’t feel like driving far to do something fun, or conversely, if you’re looking to leave the area for a little bit.
I highly encourage you to check it out! I’ve found some great events on there that I’ve gone to with my friends, and new events are added on a regular basis — not just for the weekends but for every day.
There can be so many options that it almost feels overwhelming sometimes. Here’s a curated selection of ideas for your weekend, brought to you this time exclusively from our Community Calendar!
If you’re looking for art, check out the new Party Animals exhibit at the NH Audubon Society’s McLane Center. From March 11 – May 2, local artist and educator Bethany Clarke’s work will be on display, with an opening reception from 4-6 p.m. on Friday. The exhibit features local plants and animals in hand-printed linocuts.
“The images are all initially sketched by hand and then transferred onto linoleum blocks,” the exhibit description explains. “They are then carved with a blade. For printing, the blocks are rolled with ink, and paper is pressed onto them with a barren and body weight. When pulled up, the paper includes a reverse image of the block. All prints have natural variances in tone due to human touch, which is what makes them special.”
On Friday, Canterbury Shaker Village is hosting a UNH extension workshop called Pruning Mature Apple Trees from 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. The hands-on workshop will take place in the village’s orchard. The event will be led by UNH Fruit Specialist Jeremy Delisle.
Red River Theatres is screening “Friday the 13th” on — you guessed it! — Friday, March 13! The film will start at 7 p.m., with Part II at 9 p.m. Tickets are $12 for members and $15 for general admission.
To spend time outside, check out the NH Maple Experience at the Forest Society North at the Rocks. Attendees get to see up close how sap transforms into maple syrup. The experience will be open from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. both Saturday and Sunday, as well as following weekends.
“The New Hampshire maple industry produces nearly 90,000 gallons of syrup annually during the short window between mid-February and mid-April,” according to the Forest Society. “The NH Maple Experience immerses visitors in this process, offering a journey from tree to table. Participants will enjoy a horse-drawn wagon ride, visit a working sugar house via tractor, and participate in the ‘tapping’ process themselves.”
Enjoy the weekend!
