Let’s keep options open for all students
In an age when Education Freedom Accounts and charter schools give literally thousands of New Hampshire students and parents options, it seem that the Concord School District’s decision to reduce the number of “slots” at Second Start is not only short-sighted but discriminatory.
Second Start has been providing an excellent option for hundreds of students over the past 48 years, with great success. Anyone who understands alternative education practices also knows that it is the SETTING and the physical environment, along with small classes and individual attention, that can make the difference between a student graduating or dropping out of school.
I urge the Concord School District administration and board to reconsider their stated desire to reduce their current commitment to support Concord students at Second Start. These are students who deserve to have an environment and a level of support that will allow them to become the productive and responsible citizens that we all hope they can be.
