Being a lifelong conservationist and an active volunteer in the conservation community, I have many questions regarding the Mount Sunapee expansion and the “new” revised plan.
Why are the impact studies not up to date? Some are 10 years old. How can the governor and committee make an informed decision if the data is outdated? Things can change in our environment quickly, as is evident by the low snow totals this winter. What about the future of skiing and the effects of climate change on the industry? Where will the water come from to make all the massive amounts of snow needed for another trail or two? And where will it go when it melts? More than likely, into the pristine and currently clean Gunnison Brook.
The state needs to address this water quality/quantity concern! Why, if 80 percent of the people from all of the petitions and postcard surveys are opposed to the expansion, is public opinion being disregarded?
For the past 12 years and through the terms of 2 governors, amid continued public pressure, this expansion has not passed; perhaps it’s not such a good plan. For a 14 percent increase in ski ticket sales and $50,000, which the state would get, is this really such a good deal? And where is the benefit for all New Hampshire residents?
It’s not a good plan, not a smart plan and simply not a plan that is good for the future of New Hampshire.
