Merrimack Valley’s Kristie Schoffield wasn’t ready to wrap up her high school track and field career. And now she won’t have to.

The senior, headed to Boise State next year, won the 800-meter race at the 72nd annual New England Outdoor Championships on Saturday in Norwell, Mass. Schoffield posted a time of 2 minutes, 6.9 second, a full second better than second-place Clare Martin (2:07.91) of Newton, Mass. Rhode Island native Nikki Merrill (2:09.12) took third.

“Kristie ran a fantastic race, running the current fourth-best time in the nation,” MV Coach Dave Irving said. “She set herself up well in the first 600 meters and was able to run away from the field with her kick over the final 200 meters.”

In the Division II state meet, Schoffield ran to a first-place finish in the 400, took second in the 800 and third in the 1,600, then went on to win the 800 at the Meet of Champions to earn a berth in New Englands.

Schoffield will wrap up her season at the Brooks PR Invitational in Seattle next weekend.
