Florida Senators Scott and Rubio wrote to their colleagues with their hands out for help: “A robust and timely federal response, including through supplemental programs and funding, will be required to ensure that sufficient resources are provided to rebuild critical infrastructure and public services capacity, and to assist our fellow Floridians in rebuilding their lives.”

These are senators who deny the science of climate change. They have whined for months about the inflationary impact of disaster relief during COVID; they don’t see any need for debt relief from student loans; they do not want to feed hungry children. But rich folks who live in million-dollar homes on the coast, they need federal support. What hypocrites!

FEMA cannot continue to underwrite the financial setbacks people face when they opt to live on the coast. We need to go to a ‘one and done’ policy – replace a car or fix a home lost to flooding or wind once. Give people the right to live with the risk by rebuilding or help them find a safer place to live, but do this only once. But stop asking me to subsidize unrestrained growth and development in hurricane-prone areas. And, please, means test any assistance. Don’t forget that Gov. DeSantis voted against federal assistance after Superstorm Sandy. He has money on hand to round up immigrants from Texas to fly them to Martha’s Vineyard. Let people in Florida feel the impact of their very bad political choices.
