President Donald Trump has vowed to clean out the swamp in Washington. I think I have figured out what the swamp is, and who is responsible for the swamp.
I believe Congress is the place to debate ideas and laws, then pass or reject them. One of the problems with the current situation is that one or two people, the leader of the Senate and the leader of the House, can determine what reaches the floor or does not reach the floor for a vote. Democracy is stifled this way.
I believe that a majority vote in the Senate and House should be needed to pass legislation. In the Senate, it takes a supermajority of 60 votes to get legislation passed. Forget simple democracy.
During the Obama presidency, he worked to withhold Republican support of major presidential initiatives, made frequent use of the filibuster and blocked an unprecedented number of Obama’s judicial nominees. He denied a vote on a presidential Supreme Court nomination when he had the responsibility and the time to bring it to a vote.
He has the authority to call for a vote to reopen government but won’t do it. Yes, it is Mitch McConnell.
