The Oxford dictionary defines an insurrection as “a violent uprising against an authority or government,” so I’m not sure why Frank Campana felt the need to put the word insurrection in quotation marks in his letter criticizing Democrats (“True Democrats,”Monitor, 8/3).
There were armed people storming the Capital with the intention of preventing the certification of the election by Congress. These insurrectionists cached firearms, brought bear spray, zip ties, blunt weapons, edged weapons and a gallows. They caused extensive damage and injured over 130 capital police officers. They were not “like normal tourists,” as described by Rep. Clyde of Georgia, but traitors and criminals who should be punished to the fullest extent of the law. Not by Democrats, not by Republicans, but by any and all Americans who feel that the rule of law has meaning.
