A Franklin man suffered a self-inflicted gunshot wound in Hampton on Sunday after crashing his car during a police pursuit, according to New Hampshire State Police.

Steven Haskins, 50, was first seen driving west along Route 101 in the wrong lanes Sunday afternoon, and nearly collided with other vehicles, including a Hampton Police car

Haskins was continued onto Landing Road, which was busy with beach traffic, before veering off the road and landing in a marsh.

“The actions of the driver were both dangerous and reckless, and Hampton Police continued behind the suspect in an attempt to stop the driver,” police said

Next, came the sound of a single gunshot.

Hampton Police found Haskins, near his vehicle, with a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.

“After crashing, Hampton Police reported seeing the driver’s door open and a figure moving through nearby bushes,” police said. “As Hampton Police exited their vehicles, a single gunshot was heard.”

No officers fired their weapons, police said.

Haskins was then transported to Portsmouth Regional Hospital, where he remains in critical condition. If Haskins survives, criminal charges are expected.
