The N.H. Legislature will soon vote on Gov. Chris Sununu’s veto of the death penalty repeal.
In this instance, Gov. Sununu was correct to veto the abolishment of the death penalty. The public has a responsibility to protect and support our law enforcement officers with strong laws, precisely because they are willing to carry a gun in order to protect us.
At no time in the history of the world have we had such verifiable evidence as that provided by DNA testing. Now the likelihood of erroneously convicting someone is greatly diminished. So why should we abolish the death penalty now? In cases such as Michael Addison’s, with proof beyond a shadow of a doubt that he has killed a law enforcement officer and was found guilty in a court of law, the death penalty was rightly imposed.
Everyone should know from childhood that when evidence proves they intentionally killed a law officer, they will automatically be subject to the death penalty. We have a difficult time filling law enforcement positions from the local level to the federal level, and abolishment of the death penalty will make it even worse.
