You’ll want to jitterbug, swing, twist, boogie-woogie and bop your way down to the Concord City Auditorium on Sunday for an afternoon of ’50s hits.
The Clayton Poole Orchestra, a 10-member division of the Capital Jazz Orchestra, will perform “Rock Around the Clock.” The show will feature returning vocalists CJ Poole and Laura Daigle.
Also performing will be the New England School of Dance for three or four pieces.
“What we try to do is recreate periods of history,” said Clayton Poole, the orchestra’s director.
Poole said the ’50s were a time of transition for music from big bands to the music of Elvis and rock ’n’ roll.
Rock got its start with rhythm and blues, which became what is now called rockabilly, Poole said. After the ’50s, rock branched off to different sub-genres, like metal.
CJ Poole and Daigle will perform at least two duets – “Mr. Sandman” and “Sh-Boom,” Poole said, in addition to each having solo songs.
The rest of the orchestra’s set will include songs by Bill Haley and His Comets, Elvis, Fats Domino, Buddy Holly, the American Bandstand theme and a pre-’50s song by Marilyn Monroe.
The arrangements for the orchestra, which includes six horns, will be fashioned after the original hits, said Poole, not re-imagined orchestrations.
