In his article of Oct. 10, Jonathan Baird criticizes conservatives for speaking out against the New York Times program called Project 1619, which only brings more division in our country. Baird says there is a need to go back in history and discuss more of the offenses that were committed during the period when slavery was legal in America.
Baird said he did not get enough information about the cruelty of slavery in high school. I do know what high school he attended, but I got enough information at my high school to understand the slavery was a major mistake America made in the development of this nation. If he did not get enough of the sins of slavery, he could have watched the Alex Haley TV series, Roots, that told the story of the injustices done to African Americans. This series was one of the most watched in television history.
America is great because we make our country better when we learn from our mistakes. America needs to celebrate the fact that a Republican president, Abraham Lincoln, freed the slaves and a Democratic president, Lyndon Johnson, signed into law the Civil Rights Act of 1965. Let’s celebrate how America is united by these actions and ignore Project 1619 and its advocates.
