The Southern New Hampshire University baseball team plated four runs in the bottom of the ninth inning, but fell short to New York Institute of Technology, 9-8, in Game 1 of the best-of-three East Super Regional series of the Division II NCAA Tournament in Hooksett.
Jake Coro went 2-for-4 with a homer, four RBI and two runs scored, while Joshua Goldstein was 3-for-3 with a run driven in.
Bow native and Bishop Brady graduate Tom Blandini singled and scored a run for the Penmen (40-14).
SNHU had a 1-0 lead until NYIT (36-14) scored at least one run in five of the final six frames to build a 9-4 cushion heading into the ninth. Blandini was hit by a pitch to start the ninth-inning rally, but Ariel Taveras eventually stranded Penmen at first and second to ensure NYIT held on.
Game 2 is scheduled for Saturday at noon at SNHU. If the Penmen force a Game 3, it will start after Game 2 at approximately 3:30 p.m.
