Baseball

Winnisquam 1, Belmont 0

Key players: Winnisquam – Anthony Boomer (7 IP, 0 H, 10 K, 1 BB; RBI double), Duncan Gosselin, (threw out two runners stealing); Belmont – Liam Waldron (6 IP, 2 H, 6 K, 0 BB)

Highlights: Boomer attacked the strike zone all night, allowing only three Belmont hitters to reach base (one on a walk, two on errors) and catcher Gosselin threw out two of them trying to steal. Boomer faced the minimum 18 batters through six innings and drove in the only run of the game – on a double in the fourth inning. Alex Nichols scored the game’s only run and was solid at first base, while Ayden Cushing made a diving catch in the third inning to preserve Boomer’s no-hitter.

Coaches’ quotes: “One of the best pitched high school games on both sides I’ve seen in a long time. Boom was outstanding today. He was strike one on 15 of their 22 batters. He worked ahead all day, went to a three-ball count just three times and controlled the tempo of the game. Liam pitched a great game for Belmont. They’re a really good ball club. It was nice to bounce back after a tough loss Saturday. Game took one 1 and 12 minutes. It was a fun game to be part of.” – Winnisquam’s Fred Caruso

“Liam Waldron pitched a heck of a game, but we have to tip our caps to Winnisquam’s Anthony Boomer for keeping our bats quiet all day. We were off balance and just couldn’t get anything going. It was one of those days where you wish you could get back on the field as quickly as possible to try to eliminate that bad taste.” – Belmont’s Matt LeBlanc

Records: Winnisquam 5-2; Belmont 5-2
