FOR A LONG TIME, the Merrimack Valley Pride were known as the Merrimack Valley Indians. The change was made just 15 years ago, which means there are still a lot of alumni with a nostalgic connection to the old mascot. That creates a dilemma for the school district, which must find a way to honor the past without sacrificing sensitivity. And now we hand that dilemma over to you. Our question of the week is this: Should schools ban any display of a former mascot that is considered offensive? Ideally, your answer will also serve as some sort of compromise – a bridge between then and now. Email your response by noon on Tuesday, Nov. 26, to letters@cmonitor.com. Please keep it between 150 and 400 words, and include an address and phone number for verification. We’ll run a selection in next week’s
Forum section.
