We continually hear that mass shootings are a mental illness problem, not a gun problem. Surely those who utter that statement know it is absolutely untrue. If they don’t, they’re seriously uninformed. A very small percentage of mentally ill people are violent. Those that are do not live exclusively in the United States. Every country has a population that fits into that category. So how is it that we top the list for gun massacres in the world?
We have been aptly described as “tragically exceptional.” The rate of mass shootings is consistently much higher for places with fewer restrictions on guns. Every person, who has the power to change our gun laws, and doesn’t, is responsible for the loss of life. They, and we, cannot ignore that.
