A woman was taken to the hospital after a Sunday afternoon fire caused extensive damage to her Penacook home and killed at least one cat.

Concord fire personnel responded to reports of a fire that started on a couch at 63 Merrimack St., single-family home at 4 p.m. Sunday afternoon. Emergency personnel arrived on scene to heavy smoke blanketing the area and fire blowing out of the living room window of the 2ยฝ story residence, according to a Concord fire press release. The fire was deemed under control by 4:53 p.m.

A female occupant of the home suffered โ€œnon-life threatening injuriesโ€ and was transported to Concord Hospital.

One cat was found dead in the residence, and another was missing, but a third cat that suffered severe smoke inhalation was rescued and resuscitated by fire personnel using a special oxygen mask designed for pets, according to Concord fire officials.

The four people living in the residence will be unable to return home in the near future due to the extensive damage. The Red Cross responded to the scene to provide assistance, according to a press release.
