Many Bow residents were unaware that the recycling program had been suspended. For the past several months, and perhaps longer, resident-sorted recylables have been collected but mingled with trash for disposal. The diminished market for recyclable materials can no longer sustain the cost of the program. Consequently, the Bow town manager suspended the program last October, reportedly without consulting the town’s recyling committee. The program suspension appears to have also bypassed the board of selectmen.
Residents need to be better informed of such decisions and allowed input. Certainly, the Bow recycling committee and board of selectmen should have been consulted before the decision was made. If they had, perhaps communications would have been better. For the past several months, we have been carefully separating our recyclables and dragging the blue tote curbside only to have them deposited and disposed of with the trash.
