A brush fire in the Mast Yard State Forest in Hopkinton on Sunday spread through 10.2 acres before it was contained by the Hopkinton Fire Department with the support of mutual aid from seven surrounding communities.
It took 43 firefighters in all to contain the brush fire that was first reported about 6:30 a.m. when residents nearby noticed a smoky odor.
Firefighters from Bow, Warner, Henniker, Webster, Boscawen, Dunbarton and Bradford assisted Hopkinton in fighting the blaze. Personnel from the state forestry department were also at the scene.
Keith Gilbert, chief coordinator for the Capital Area Mutual Aid Fire Compact, said the fire was contained and under control about 10:15 a.m. A trench was dug around the perimeter to prevent the fire from spreading.
As of Sunday afternoon, the blaze was controlled but still being watered down.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
