For a very long time, I’ve been a happy and contented Concordian. Last Sunday’s Monitor Forum section reinforced one of the many reasons I feel so fortunate to live here: I get to read the Monitor every day, one of the great joys of my daily life.
While readers occasionally pick at poor editing or layout, I overlook these trivialities and see the wonderful, grand newspaper that is the Monitor. Every day, I catch up on interesting local stories in moderation, read national news, and enjoy the comics and puzzles. But what I really look forward to each week is the Sunday Forum, and last week’s was the best I can ever recall.
Four excellent pieces (“Worth the risk,”“Rooted in place, and happy,”“Rumney and D.C.,” and “Today, I stand with the promise of America”) presented me with exceptional thoughtfulness and insight I rarely find in any media. Reading the spirited letters from engaged citizens who are fighting the good fight to build a better city, state and world encourages me and makes my soul feel proud. Even the Forum Tidbit Quotable seemed particularly apropos to the overall theme of love and human kindness.
When I got to the last page of the Forum section, the book reviews, I was delighted to see a review of a new book by a local author (The Mystical Adventures), written by another local writer from the New Hampshire Writer’s Project.
So I give humble, grateful thanks to the Monitor, its readers, writers and staff for publishing such informative and inspiring material, day after weary day. Even the circulation staff gets my appreciation for having the paper in my driveway, dry and banded to protect it, before 5 a.m. every day.
