Thanks to Vito the dog, Belmont police said they’ve taken two of three juvenile suspects into custody following a “brazen” daytime burglary Friday.
Police said they responded to High Street at 11:20 a.m. Friday after a resident left to shop at the grocery store and returned to find a door open and the home rummaged through.
The department’s K-9 team, consisting of Vito and officer Evan Boulanger, established a scent track at the home and canvassed the neighborhood on foot. In the meantime, a contractor working in Belmont’s downtown area told police that several minors were walking away from the neighborhood with a box of electronics and a guitar.
Within an hour of the call, the K-9 team was led to two of the juvenile suspects, one of which police said admitted to participating in the burglary. Police are continuing to investigate, gathering fingerprints and evidence from the High Street home and looking for a third suspect.
The minors taken into custody will face “various charges” through the state’s Juvenile Justice System, police said.
