A circus

“When a clown moves into a palace, he doesn’t become a king. The palace becomes a circus.” This re-work of an old Turkish proverb from British academic Elizabeth Bangs describes the Trump presidency perfectly. We sent a clown to the White House and he, in turn, appointed more clowns and now, we have a circus. Trump, RFK Jr., Gabbard, Noem, Hegseth. What should we have expected? Statesmanship? Leadership? Vision? Unfortunately, no.

What we did get is Jeffrey Epstein and accusations of treason against a former president. We get tariffs that are on and off and off an on. We get mass firings and then mass hirings. We get fights with Harvard, the Fed chairman and the Washington Commanders.

Perhaps the president’s limited attention span is more suited to a three ring circus and he is incapable of focusing on the bigger picture. Nonetheless, perhaps if he paid less attention to the name of an NFL team and more to things such as children starving in Gaza, we would all be a bit better off.
