School board denigrates its own school

At the July 7 meeting of the Concord school board, board member Brenda Hastings said of Rundlett Middle School, “It’s not a great environment for learning, and we’re going to need to do something at some point. So whether it’s building new or renovating what we’ve got and putting lipstick on that pig, then that’s what we’re going to have to decide.” I wonder how the principal, teachers, staff, and students of Rundlett — past and present — felt when Ms. Hastings referred to their school as a “pig.” As the parents of a student who had an excellent learning experience in her three years at Rundlett, my wife and I found this comment deeply offensive. It is appalling that a school board member would make such a disparaging remark about a Concord public school.
