Despite concerns from health care leaders and communities nationwide, Congress has passed legislation that includes the largest health care cuts in recent history.
In New Hampshire, families and hospitals are bracing for impact. The legislation cuts nearly $1 trillion from Medicaid and the Affordable Care Act, threatening coverage for 17 million Americans, including tens of thousands of Granite Staters. Starting in 2026, these changes will take hold. Premiums and out-of-pocket costs are expected to rise sharply, and new red tape could push many off coverage.
Major Medicaid cuts will strain rural health systems, forcing difficult choices at local hospitals. Seniors may lose access to nursing homes, and people fighting cancer, addiction, or disability may face treatment delays. The economic consequences will also be felt. Health care is a major employer in New Hampshire, and job losses are projected statewide. Emergency rooms will be overwhelmed, and local budgets will feel the pressure.
New Hampshire has worked hard to improve access to care across party lines. This legislation puts much of that progress at risk. Now that the bill is law, we must hold our representatives accountable and work together to protect the most vulnerable. Health care is a cornerstone of our economy and our communities โ and we cannot afford to let it crumble.
