Franklin police arrested a 64-year-old man for domestic violence Tuesday night.

At 9:40 p.m., officers responded to Prospect Street after a caller claimed his father was threatening him and his mother with a large knife, according to an affidavit.

At the scene, police cleared out all neighboring apartments and found a man near the entrance to his apartment holding a knife. The man, identified as Michael Carter, cooperated with police, dropping the knife and allowing officers to escort him to a police cruiser.

Interviews with the mother and son indicated Carter had a history of violence, particularly toward the mother, according to the affidavit. The two entered into a verbal argument Tuesday before Carter brandished a knife, the first time his son had seen him do so, the document said.

Carter was charged with criminal threatening under domestic violence. Carter was arraigned in Franklin Circuit Court on Wednesday and is being held on preventative detention.
