Investing in our students is investing in Concord
As Concord prepares to vote for School Board, I urge residents to re-elect Cara Meeker — a leader who keeps education, not politics, at the center of every decision.
Her opponent, Jeff Wells, is arguing for a “pause and reassess” of school spending because enrollment is down and taxes are rising. While affordability concerns are real, the School Board’s mission is to educate students for lifelong success — not to manage the city’s entire tax burden. Cutting investment in education doesn’t fix the state’s broken tax system; it only delays progress for our children and weakens the community we all share.
Mr. Wells points to enrollment declines and rising per-pupil costs to oppose the new middle school. But whether there are 3,000 or 3,700 students, heating systems, roofs and accessibility requirements don’t shrink with class size. Independent engineers and architects have confirmed that renovating the current school is neither feasible nor cost-effective. The Board’s decision to build a new middle school reflects professional guidance, careful planning and long-term fiscal responsibility.
Instead of attacking local educators and volunteers, the Concerned Citizens of Concord could direct their energy toward the real issue — state-level tax reform that ensures fair funding for education. Strong schools preserve property values, attract families and sustain community vitality.
