A man in Webster was arrested Wednesday after a multi-hour standoff with law enforcement officers who were trying to serve a domestic violence protection order, police reported.
Around 4:33 p.m., New Hampshire State Police went to a home on Battle Street to serve the order to James Carpentier, 48.
When troopers arrived, Carpentier was inside a camper on the property, authorities said.
Carpentier became uncooperative when a trooper knocked on the camper door and he made statements suggesting he had a firearm, police said.
He then refused to come out of the camper, leading to a standoff that lasted several hours, according to state police.
Additional officers were called to the scene, including the New Hampshire State Police SWAT Unit. Negotiators worked with Carpentier for several hours while a portion of Battle Street was closed due to the unfolding situation.
The standoff ended peacefully when Carpentier agreed to surrender and exited the camper without incident, police said.
He was taken into custody and charged with obstructing government administration and resisting arrest, police said.
The incident remains under investigation.
State Police were assisted at the scene by the Webster Police and Fire Departments, the Merrimack County Sheriff’s Office, the New Hampshire Department of Transportation, and several surrounding agencies.
