Frederick Douglass spoke “What to the slave is the fourth of July.” Nelson Mandala spoke “The extent to which you do not have equality of income and opportunity is exactly the extent you do not live in a democracy.” What exactly will we be celebrating? Among other things: The decimation of the Native American indigenous population? Slavery? Lynchings? Jim Crow? The incarceration of American citizens during World War II? Crimes against humanity committed in Vietnam? The secret bombing of Cambodia? Funding, aiding and abetting the collective punishment, ethnic cleansing, genocide and the white settler colonial project of our fascist Israeli allies? To the more than 75,000 dead Palestinians, Lebanese, Syrians, Iranians and Yemenis, what is Celebration 250?
