The Monitor wants to know what you think of the city’s downtown.
When Catherine McLaughlin and Rachel Wachman embarked on this project, they hoped their analysis of Main Street businesses would spark a community conversation about what is and isn’t here. Opinions are bound to vary depending on people’s age, interests and habits.
We want to know: What brings you to Main Street? What do you do while you’re there? What do you want to see more of in the area? What, if anything, would you want to change?
To kick off the next phase in this project, we invite you to participate in our community survey. Share your thoughts on everything from what you like about downtown and where you go on Main Street to potential areas for improvement.

Future stories in the On Main series will explore everything from business longevity and landlords to the emergent art scene and young professionals. We hope to host some community roundtable discussions to foster a space for in-person dialogue about downtown.
With the interactive map, you don’t have to search Google in perpetuity to find out which dining options, stores and services are open at a given time. It also allows you to view Main Street holistically, at different times of the day.
We intend to continue updating the map as businesses ebb and flow downtown. Rather than capturing a moment in time, the map will evolve with the natural progression of the city.
Note: The survey is not anonymous to help prevent repeat responses, but we won’t quote your responses without your permission.
Beyond sending us your thoughts in survey format, if you have anything else you’d like to share, we invite you to reach out to us: rwachman@cmonitor.com and cmclaughlin@cmonitor.com.
