Daniel and Christa would be appalled
Daniel Webster stands as arguably our greatest New Hampshire legislator, his bronze likeness keeping watch outside our State House in Concord. Not far away stands the statue of Christa McAuliffe, a proud New Hampshire public school teacher who reached for the stars.
Both Christa and Daniel would no doubt be appalled if they could see what is happening on our ballots this Nov. 3.
Question 2 is part of an ongoing, systemic effort by those who wish to dismantle our public school system. This ideology envisions a state and a country where the bedrock concept of communal responsibility is discarded — a cold, survival-of-the-fittest world where everything, including education, is privatized or stripped away.
They market this vision under the banner of “freedom,” but true freedom relies on an enlightened, educated citizenry. Both Christa and Daniel understood that public education is the great equalizer and the cornerstone of our democracy.
Don’t let Republican Free Staters dismantle the heart of our communities. Please join me in voting No on Question 2 on Nov. 3.
