Police placed Franklin under a brief shelter in place early Friday morning after gunshots were reported in the Smith Hill Road area. There were no injuries, and two people were arrested, police said.

The Franklin Police Department received a call for shots fired at 267 Smith Hill Rd. at 2:44 a.m., Chief Dan Poirier said. Officers set a perimeter around the area and called for those in the residence to step outside.

Four people came out. The two individuals taken in police custody have been identified as James Renfrew, 74, who lives at the home, and Justin Renfrew, 41. The pair are father and son.

Two others — an adult and a juvenile — also left the house. Franklin Police would not share their names at the time of publication.

The incident led police to put the city of Franklin under a shelter in place at 3:22 a.m., lasting for about an hour, Poirier said. There is no danger to the area at this time.

Poirier said the cause is still under investigation and the residence is currently being searched. An arraignment for James and Justin Renfrew is scheduled for Friday.
