A Pembroke woman has died and a Concord woman remains hospitalized following a head-on crash that caused one vehicle to catch fire Friday on Manchester Street.
Sandra Smith, 54, of Pembroke died Monday at Concord Hospital, Concord police Lt. Sean Fordย said. Smith was admitted to the hospital Friday morning after a three-vehicle collision thatย led herย 2019 Kia Soul to catch fire, police said.
โThe investigation is ongoing but a medical emergency may have played a part in this,โ Ford said Wednesday.
Smithโs car collided head-on with a black Nissan Rogue driven by Robin Broadbent, 58, of Concord who suffered serious injuries and is still in the hospital.
The crash was reported at about 10:02 a.m. near the Airport Road and Manchester Street intersection. It also involved a third vehicle, a GMC Acadia, driven by Armand Landry, 72, of Pembroke. The GMC sustained minor damage, while the other two vehicles sustained extensive damage.
The circumstances leading to the crash remain under investigation; however, Ford confirmed that the Kia Soul and the Nissan Rogue were traveling in opposite directions.
The cityโs accident reconstruction team will have more information in the weeks ahead and are looking into why the Kia Soul caught fire after impact, he said. There were several witnesses to the crash, which closed a portion of Manchester Street for several hours Friday.
Friends and family members are pulling their resources and rallying behind Broadbent as she works toward her recovery. A GoFundMe page created this past weekend aims to raise $10,000 to provide financial support for Broadbentโs significant medical costs. Additionally, there is a Meal Train for the Broadbent family with opportunities to provide meals through the end of May.
The organizer of the Meal Train, Kellie Denoncourt, wrote that the car crash was โsignificantโ but that Broadbent is โa fighter.โ
โShe has fed all of us at one time or another. She has always taken care of those whom she loves. We are all family.โ
