Letter: Elect Croft as county sheriff

Published: 8/27/2020 12:01:14 AM

I am writing in support of David Croft, who is running for Merrimack County sheriff.

I have gotten to know Dave over many years through his position as the director of the Merrimack County Adult Diversion Program. I am a criminal defense attorney who has had several dozen clients go through the diversion program.

Under Dave’s leadership, these generally first-time offenders are able to avoid the possibility of a criminal conviction and other punitive sanctions. Instead, once they are found eligible, the program develops a plan in which the defendant must complete community service, substance abuse education, life skills, etc. They do not accept referrals for violent crimes, domestic violence, and other serious crimes. Those who complete the program have been found to have a much lower rate of recidivism.

It is not a free pass and these individuals are held accountable.

Dave is a pleasure to work with, in part because of his positive, no-nonsense attitude. Notable is his good judgment. I have to assume his years in the Marine Corps and law enforcement have helped him develop leadership qualities.

We need people like Dave in positions of authority. I hope others will consider electing Dave Croft to county sheriff.
