The criminal trial for former Concord High School teacher Howie Leung who is accused of sexually assaulting a Concord student here and at a boarding school in Massachusetts has been postponed again, this time until next winter.

The jury trial, which was set to begin Tuesday at Middlesex Superior Court in Woburn, Mass., has been rescheduled for Jan. 25, 2022, with a pre-trial conference on Jan. 14.

The schedule of jury trials has been backed up in Massachusetts since last year, due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Jury trials were halted in the state in March 2020 when the pandemic hit, and did not resume again until Jan. 2021, meaning many trials have been delayed far into the future.

This is the fourth time the Leung trial was rescheduled this year, after originally being set for June, 2020.

Leung is currently residing in Malden, Massachusetts in accordance with his bail conditions, which also include being monitored by a GPS device, maintaining a curfew between midnight and 6 a.m., and giving up possession of his passport.

On April 7, he was given access to his passport for one day, to get a Massachusetts driver’s license at the Registry of Motor Vehicles. He is permitted to travel to New Hampshire only for legal or medical appointments.

Leung is accused of repeatedly sexually assaulting a former Concord student during the summers of 2015 and 2016 at the Fessenden Summer ELL Program in Newton, Mass., when the student was 13 and 14 years old, according to court documents. He is being tried in Massachusetts, because that is where the most serious crimes allegedly occurred.

Leung is facing two charges of aggravated rape of a child with a 10-year age difference, two charges of aggravated indecent assault and battery on a child under age 14, and two counts of aggravated indecent assault and battery on a person age 14 or older.

He has pleaded not guilty to all charges.
