A malware scam across New Hampshire and Massachusetts in February stole thousands of dollars from ATMs at multiple establishments, including Bell Brothers, a convenience store in Pittsfield.
Now, months later, police have caught the man suspected of carrying out the scam, called “jackpotting,” which involves using a fake bank card to drain money from an ATM.
The Pittsfield Police Department collaborated with other local and federal departments to identify Stefano Mazzocchi, a citizen of Romania, as the perpetrator, according to a post from Pittsfield police on the department’s Facebook page.
Authorities caught Mazzocchi in Long Island on May 31, and he has since been extradited to New Hampshire, where he faces felony theft charges. Mazzocchi was held at the Merrimack County Jail prior to his expected arraignment in the 6th Circuit Concord District Court on Wednesday.
Pittsfield police said he entered the country illegally around 2023 and has been “committing jack potting thefts and placing credit card skimmers up and down the eastern sea board.”
