Obama versus Trump

After reading Bill Bunker’s Jan. 28 letter, I must assume the writer lives in an alternate, fact-averse universe. Where to begin? Obama trashed the economy? Really? The unemployment rate was 10 percent when he took office, 5 percent when he left; the stock market at about 6,000 in 2009, close to 20,000 eight years later. And, most telling, far more jobs created in his last year in office than in Trump’s first.

Bunker then opines that Obama “made an impotent, secretive deal with a dangerous regime.” It was a deal made in consonance with five other countries, a deal the IAEA says is working and without which Iran would be free to ramp up production of nuclear weapons.

In regard to legalizing the status of DACA Dreamers, which some 85 percent of Americans support, this was an Obama initiative made when Congress refused to act. Although a majority of its members favored legalization, its Republican leadership refused to give Obama a “win.”

Perhaps the most egregious example of Bunker’s chutzpah is his condemnation of the former president’s “moral weakness.” In short, he is unfavorably comparing a man who rose from a single parent household to editor of the Harvard Law Review to the U.S. Senate to the presidency, whose marriage is above reproach, to a thrice married man who cheated on two of his wives, a sexual predator who consorted with porn stars, a man sued for breach of contract more than 2,000 times.

I could go on.
