I read Robert Azzi’s Easter Sunday My Turn with great interest. He said, “Every effort I made was too angry, too separated from reason other than my own, to share, and I needed a pause…” I thought, perhaps now he would use his public forum to do the hard thing, i.e. unite rather than divide through his use of bigotry and hatred of those who see things differently than he does. Alas, my hopes for a change in Azzi’s writings have vanished. “As a dog returns to his vomit, so a fool repeats his folly.” This ancient Hebrew proverb means fools are so blind to their own faults and so incapable of change, that like dogs, they return to eat their vomit even if it’s poisonous. Azzi has figuratively returned to his vomit; his angry, hateful bigoted words; words “…too separated from reason other than his own.”
His hatred and disdain for conservatives, who are admittedly just as flawed as he is, rings loud and clear in his latest screed. He quotes Professor Malcom Kerr describing the truly civilized man as marked by empathy. By this definition, Mr. Azzi is uncivilized. How often has he “walked in my shoes” so he can truly understand why we conservatives feel the way we do? To my knowledge, never. Instead he continues to denigrate and tear down rather than build up. How long will the Monitor continue to print such vile attacks on a large portion of its readership?
