Gov. Chris Sununu has delivered on his promise and has put forth a family medical leave insurance plan that works not just for New Hampshire’s families but local businesses as well.

Thanks to Gov. Sununu, Granite Staters will be provided with a better work-life balance. In times of crisis, as an employee’s spouse, child or parent is in need of medical care, or in times of joy, as the birth or adoption of a child is celebrated, New Hampshire families will be able to take the leave they need without fearing loss of their wages.

By partnering with Vermont, and providing coverage to the 18,500 state employees in both the Granite and Green Mountain states, Govs. Sununu and Phil Scott have provided the employee base that will allow insurance carriers to craft competitively priced plans.

As New Hampshire seeks to attract a younger workforce, this plan gives employers an added incentive to offer to young employees looking to raise a family. In the event that an employer finds this plan does not work for them, their employees will still have access to a family medical leave insurance plan via a private insurance carrier.

As a young legislator, and one who simultaneously works in the insurance industry, I know the importance of a family medical leave insurance plan that keeps costs low for Granite State families. Gov. Sununu has risen to the challenge and has crafted a plan that takes advantage of public-private partnerships.

Gov. Sununu’s plan works for New Hampshire’s families and businesses. As legislators, the onus is now on us to get the job done and pass legislation authorizing this program.
