DURHAM — One week after making an impression on Division III, Bishop Brady senior Josh Gentchos made one on the entire state, nearly tying the state record in the 100-meter dash and also winning the 200 meters, highlighting area performances at the track and field Meet of Champions held at the University of New Hampshire’s Wildcat Stadium on Sunday.

Gentchos’ winning time in the 100 of 10.77 seconds came within .04 seconds of the record set by Merrimack Valley’s Seth Baylus in 2021. Gentchos raced against potentially the strongest group of sprinters in state history, with seven sprinters breaking 11 seconds in Sunday’s 100 final.

Gentchos won the 200 in 21.83 seconds later in the meet and also anchored Bishop Brady’s 4x100-meter relay team which finished fifth in 43.19 seconds, besting the time the Giants ran last week when they set the Division III record. Joshua-Stephen Bissah (senior), Seamus McIntyre (junior) and Alan Yap (senior) also ran on the New Englands-bound relay.

The top six finishers in each event qualified for Saturday’s New England Interscholastic Outdoor Track and Field Championship, which will also be hosted by UNH.

Concord seniors Nick Reynolds and Alain Twite also won state titles on Sunday. Reynolds, who set the javelin state record a week ago, officially became the best in the state with another nice throw of 184 feet, 1 inch. After finishing second in all three jumping events last week, Twite claimed Sunday’s triple jump title in 46-2.75.

Twite also finished second in the long jump (just one inch shy of the winner, Winnacunnet’s Oliver Duffy) and Colby Nyhan was second in the pole vault to qualify for New Englands.

Other area boys who qualified for New Englands are: Coe-Brown’s Jamie Lano (second 800) and Elias Warner (third shot put, fourth discus); John Stark’s Logan Montgomery (fourth 400), Sam Kinsey-Turner (fourth high jump) and Rio Calle (fifth long jump); Bow’s Ben McDowell (third pole vault), Alden Betterley (fifth 1,600) and Kody McCranie (sixth 200).

Merrimack Valley’s Nicolas Oglesby (third triple jump) and Concord Christian’s Rolen Sanderson (fifth 400) also advanced.

Concord junior Ella Goulas was the only area champion on the girls’ side, leaping 36-7.5 to win the triple jump. Goulas also finished second in the high jump and ran a leg of the fourth-place 4x100 with Chelsea Toenah, Ballay Conteh and Grace Saysaw (sixth 100).

Morgan Doherty (fourth 100 hurdles, sixth 300 hurdles), Chloe Gudas (fifth 800), Nabah Yahya and Maddie Muller formed Concord’s third-place 4x400.

The Tide also had strong performances from Kendall Barton (tied third pole vault) and Shelly Smith (fifth 3,200).

Hopkinton’s Grace Hall (fourth triple jump), Maddy Lane (fifth 1,600, sixth 3,200) and Shaylee Murdough (sixth 800); Bow’s Camden Wilson (third high jump) and Julia Hou (tied third pole vault); Coe-Brown’s Isabelle Grenier (fourth shot put) and Emma Zeblisky (fifth javelin); Winnisquam’s Lauren MacDonald (second shot put), Belmont’s Adeline Takantjas (sixth triple jump) and Kearsarge’s Amelia Lefebvre (tied sixth high jump) all qualified for New Englands on the girls’ side.

Coach Mullen honored

League officials also honored Concord resident and longtime Merrimack Valley coach and educator, Bob Mullen, in recognition of his near four decades of service to the sport of track and field.

Mullen has been the head coach of MV’s track program for 33 years. He founded the New Hampshire Track and Field Coaches Association in 2005 and also was the meet director for the Merrimack Valley Invitational (now Sanborn Invitational) for 18 years. During the indoor season, Mullen is the meet director for any NHIAA meets held at Plymouth State.
