I live in a country where one law applies to the president, and another law applies to you and me. I live in a country where the president can obstruct justice not just once, but several times. Over 500 former federal prosecutors – from both parties – have signed a letter saying that were Donald Trump a private citizen, his actions as described in the Mueller report would lead to his indictment. That means if you or I did any of what Donald Trump has done in this report, we would be facing criminal charges. But not Donald Trump.
That same Mueller report, remember, documents “widespread and systematic” efforts by Russia to influence the 2016 elections. While the report does not find an actual conspiracy, it certainly shows the Trump campaign and family to be aware of these efforts, and instead of reporting this to the FBI, happily cheering the Russians on.
Not only did Trump welcome Russia’s help, he refuses to discuss any efforts to prevent this from happening again. On his happy phone call to President Vladimir Putin of Russia last week, Trump not only failed to bring the topic up, but laughed with Putin about the report.
If you or I were responsible for our country’s national security and behaved in this manner, we would likely be charged with treason. But not Donald Trump.
