I was standing in line at the old Sears store, happily waiting for my COVID vaccine. Looking out the portal to the rest of the Steeplegate mall, I could see down the whole length of the mall’s central corridor. The sun was shining through the many skylights in the mall’s roof. Nobody was in the whole corridor. And yet, above all the abandoned storefronts, spaced about twenty feet apart, very bright electric lights were turned on.

Maybe a few lights are needed for security reasons at night, but this seemed so unnecessary and a tremendous waste of electricity on a sunny day. I am talking about hundreds and hundreds of bright lights. And I wonder who pays for this? Conserving energy is one of the important things we can do to reduce pollution and global warming. There are many little things we can all do to help the environment that would all add up to making a big difference. And using less electricity in an empty mall is such a simple way to help Mother Earth.
