In less than two years the federal REAL ID drivers license will be required to board airplane flights and enter some federal buildings.

With that in mind, the state DMV will be holding special sessions Saturday just for issuing the licenses at DMV locations around the state, including the Concord office at 23 Hazen Drive, from 8 am. to noon. Similar sessions will be held the second Saturday of each month for the time being.

The license, which looks similar to ordinary state driver’s license, must be obtained in person by showing a certified copy of a birth certificate, social security information, and two proofs of residency. A version is also available for a non-driver identification card.

Getting a REAL ID is voluntary and other federally compliant identification, such as a passport, may also be used for domestic air travel. The deadline for implementation is October 2020.

There is no additional fee for REAL ID but if it is not time for annual renewal of your license, there is a $3 replacement fee.

Officials have estimated that only about 15 percent of New Hampshire adults have obtained REAL ID identification.
