Former West Virginia coach Stewart dies

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - Former West Virginia football coach Bill Stewart died yesterday of what athletic department officials said was an apparent heart attack.

A statement issued by spokesman Michael Fragale said Stewart's family notified the university yesterday. Fragale said Stewart was golfing at the time.

Stewart, 59, resigned last summer and was replaced by Dana Holgorsen the same night. Stewart had gone 28-12 in three seasons after taking over for Rich Rodriguez but failed to earn a Bowl Championship Series berth.

Stewart had signed a six-year contract in September 2008, but the agreement was amended in 2010 when Athletic Director Oliver Luck decided to replace him. Holgorsen was hired as offensive coordinator and head coach-in-waiting, while Stewart was to serve his final season in 2011.

NEW ORLEANS - An Alabama fan was charged with sexual battery after authorities say he was captured on video performing a simulated sex act on an unconscious LSU fan after the BCS championship game.

An Orleans Parish grand jury yesterday handed up an indictment against 32-year-old Brian H. Downing. It charges him with one count each of sexual battery of a male victim and obscenity.

Notre Dame linebacker charged with intimidation

SOUTH BEND, Ind. - Notre Dame linebacker Carlo Calabrese was charged with a misdemeanor count of intimidation for allegedly making threatening remarks to a police officer after quarterback Tommy Rees was arrested.

According to a probable cause affidavit, Calabrese became upset when he saw Rees being placed under arrest and twice told a police officer, "My people will get you."

Heisman winner Detmer selected to Hall of Fame

DALLAS - Heisman Trophy winner and BYU star Ty Detmer was selected to the College Football Hall of Fame.

The National Football Foundation announced on ESPN that Detmer will be part of a class of 14 former players and three former coaches who will be inducted into the Hall of Fame in December.

The rest of the class will be revealed today in New York.

Three Arkansas players charged with burglary

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - Three Arkansas football players, including wide receivers Marquel Wade and Maudrecus Humphrey, were arrested and charged with burglarizing dorm rooms.

University of Arkansas police arrested Wade, Humphrey and tight end Andrew Peterson yesterday after looking at security video in which the players allegedly were walking into rooms where items, such as computers and textbooks, had been taken.

An arrest report says witnesses also identified the players. Some of the stolen items were recovered from a bookstore near campus, and the report says a store clerk identified the three as regularly selling used items.

Records from the Washington County Jail indicate the players have a court hearing tomorrow. The records do not indicate whether they have attorneys.

DURHAM - For most of the last decade, an experienced finger has been pulling the trigger for the University of New Hampshire football team. It started with Ricky Santos, who was a four-year starter from 2004-2007. R.J. Toman, who filled in when Santos was hurt as a senior, took over from 2008-2010. Kevin Decker, who subbed effectively when Toman was hurt in 2010, assumed the starting role last year as a senior, led the Wildcats to their eighth straight playoff berth, and was named the Colonial Athletic Association Offensive Player of the Year.

SOUTH BEND, Ind. - Notre Dame quarterback Tommy Rees was pepper-sprayed and arrested early yesterday after he allegedly ran from away from an off-campus party and knocked the wind out of a police officer who caught up to him.

A probable cause affidavit says the 6-2, 210-pound Rees continued to resist even after being knocked down by police Officer Brandon Stec, so Stec used pepper spray and was finally able to subdue him with the help of other officers.

Police Capt. Phil Trent said linebacker Carlo Calabrese tried to talk to the police, asking them why they don't like Notre Dame. Trent said Calabrese eventually grew angry and twice told officers: "My people will get you."

As soon as she got the hand-me-down stick from big sister Lyndsey, Hailey Colburn was throwing lacrosse balls in the front yard. It wasn't long before she joined a team for middle schoolers, even though she was only in fifth grade. By the time she finished her freshman year at Concord High, Colburn was spending her summers at lacrosse camps and on travel teams. The college recruiting started then, too, and she knew she'd play the sport at the next level.

But Colburn wasn't expecting a college career like the one she's wrapping up, especially after illness and injury limited her to just three

games in her freshman year at Wheaton College. Colburn came back and led Wheaton in scoring her sophomore year, did it again as a junior, and this year, as a senior captain, Colburn tied the school record for points in a season with 112, set the school record for assists in a season with 36, and led the Lyons to their best record in eight years (12-6).

Final four would take effect in 2014

HOLLYWOOD, Fla. - College football is on the verge of finally having a playoff, its own version of the final four.

For the first time, all the power brokers who run the highest level of the sport are comfortable with the idea of deciding a championship the way it's done from pee-wees to pros. And the way fans have been hoping they would for years.

"Yes, we've agreed to use the P word," Pac-12 Commissioner Larry Scott said yesterday.

They want to limit it to four teams. That's for sure. Now they have to figure out how to pick the teams, where and when to play the games and how the bowls do or do not fit in. The new postseason format would go into effect for the 2014 season.
