State Senator Denise Ricciardi’s letter (Monitor, 10/8) claimed that the rollback of the rooms and meals tax from 9 to 8.5% would “leave more money in the pockets of New Hampshire families” is technically a true statement. However, I think some context is missing.
The savings on a $3.29 happy meal is less than 1.7 cents. A nice steak dinner for two with a tab of $100 would save fifty cents. When I win the lottery I want to stay a night in the presidential suite at the Mount Washington Hotel which costs about $2,300 a night. The savings is a whopping $11.50. Rolling back the rooms and meals tax cost the state of NH about $1.7 million that could have paid to repair roads and bridges. As for putting money back in the pockets of NH residents, not so much.
